Picked Koss, because they are cheap and spending more is a waste. I use earbuds, though, not headphones per se.

if you are of this viewpoint, then so be it... not everyone needs high end headphones.
but if you are asking about high end headphones, other than the koss porta-pros you arent going to get very much (though their mid-range phones are good).

anyway, if you want the answer, go to www.head-fi.org and www.headphone.com
in fact, on head-fi, there is a best headphones thread.

i have sennheiser hd590s (big, completely unportable) and er-6i (tiny, very portable 'canalphones')
both are great.

I also have the 497's, and they're great. I don't think the poll results are too surprising. Sennheiser is the best.

Labtec Icon 750. They're not the best, but they won't have any competition in that price range - $4.95 on sale. They are capable of some pretty impressive bass, and overall sound quite good. Of course, I've never sampled any of the incredibly expensive top-of-the-line headphones; but I do still like these.

If you fly (travel) a lot with your iPod, gaming on the plane, etc, the Etymotics are unbelievable for their small size, amazing sound, and excellent earplug (noiseblocking) abilities. I had a baby sitting in back of me screaming the entire time and I could easily sleep with these on with some music playing. Get them with custom earplugs and you'll be in heaven (nirvana, wherever you think is really nice).

Sennheiser for everything else.

Best cans site on the web = headroom.com

Right on  ,nothing beats the old school stuff.

I still have and I am still using my old Koss HV/1A and they still sound great & have lots of power.

I tried to replace them a few weeks ago with new ones and tried newer koss, panasonic, sony ... and I ended up repairing my old koss because the new ones are just too wimpy, they got not power when you start cranking the up & none of them can even come close to the power that my HV/1A puts out. :)

Senheiser and Grado are good.
Koss makes some excelent portable headphones.
But every company has their good and bad products.
