alot of people recommend the hd497 what about the hd457 they look exactly the same

they are not exactly the same, the 497's come with soft ear-cups while the 457's are fabric cushioned.

cant say much about the 457s, but many agree the the 497s offer the best performance til you jump into the $130+ range or so.

no, its because they sound better. head-fi.org headphone.com etc. 497's are best until u start paying 3 times that much. don't save 20 bux and in the end waste 30 bux on something your not satisfied with remember burn in.. just play stuff loud on em continuously for 24+ hours to break em in...
