My stepbrother and his wife are looking for a new tv and their budget is 1500. His wife is dead set on plasma even though she knows nothing about it besides being flat Nd thin. I don't know enough to give an honest recommendation.

Movies? TV only? Gaming possibility? What size?

I ask size because after my digging I found some 42" sets for less than 37" sets except with less features (720p vs 1080p etc).

LOL I love to lowball Craigslisters for 100 dollars for nice Mits rproj CRTs. I tell them they are large and do not put out a very good picture compared to plasmas and LCDs. 😛

Here's a site that gives TV info and reviews.
Takes a while to read and dig out the information but
you should pick up a few things.

Asking for the "best TV" here is like asking which is the best car to buy.
Everybody has there own opinions and there are a lot of factors to consider.

Try .........

I just looked at the pages for receivers, projectors, etc. and it seems like it's a totally random order / out of date? What are these ratings based off of?

If you want to research options and get opinions on things, AVSforum is a great resource.

For 50" at or under $1500 you're best option is Plasma. The Panasonic TH-50PX600U is nice and can be found online for about $1499 + Shipping.

A smaller screen like 46" or 42" drops the price down to about $1000 and offers more options. I don't see many true LCD TVs at 50". They all seem to be rear projection (not the same).

The 3 factors that may hinder a potential buyer from getting plasma are as follows. 1) It can reflect glare moreso than LCD 2) Image retention (IR) is a known issue. Most of the time it goes away after a few minutes. This is when a still image burns into the screen and remains there either temporarily or perminantly (usually not perminant). 3) If you must have 1080p then you would probably have an easier time finding an LCD as most Plasma displays I've looked at are 720p (1024x768 native).

50" isn't really an LCD size, for whatever reason. You can get a good 47" 1080p in that price range (actually, I don't think they make too many big 720p LCDs any more), but a 52" will be substantially more.

Costco has a nice Philips 47" for $1500. (Whoops! $1600 now.)

As someone mentioned in the other thread, CC has the 46" Sharp Aquos for $1300 on Black Friday.

Both LCD and 1080p.

If you want the whole 50", lots of good 720p plasmas for that price.
