What are your recommendations for this? Also, do the new plasmas still have a potential for screen burn in or have they got around this now? I will probably use the TV to watch television on as well - may even get an HD or Blu Ray DVD player for it at some point, but for now, the main purpose would be to play xbox 360 on it...

Thanks in advance !!

Plasmas never got burn-in, they can image retention and they always will as it is inherent to their design, but newer plasmas are much less prone to that than others. Also, unlike burn-in seen on CRTs, image retention on plasmas is correctable, so it isn't nearly the cause for concern that burn-in is.

As for recommendations, it is hard to make any good ones without knowing more about your needs. Do you want to be able to hook anything else up to the display other than the 360? Do you want the TV to be able to receive over-the-air broadcasts? At what distance will you be viewing the TV from and under what lighting conditions? Do you have a price range you'd like to limit yourself to? Anwsers to those questions would allow to come up with some good suggestions.

My vote in that range is Definitely an LCD. Projections below 56 inches are silly. Plasmas wont give you 1080P that low, so blu-ray/HD-DVD with it wont be as nice. Also LCD response times for games is great.

Recommendations:
Westinghouse 37 and 42 inch 1080p Sets. Lots of forum user's use them as desktop monitors. Damn sexy for a damn good price. No internal tuner

I personally use the Vizio 47inch 1080p set, and have no complaints about it. Great tuner and great picture. This is 1700 at Costco and is amazing.

The Sony Bravia, Sharp Aquos and Samsung LCD's in that size range are incredibly nice, but you pay for the name, typically these will have a tuner.

Avoid: ANYTHING SCEPTRE... worst product I have used in some time. Thank god I returned the 42 inch Sceptre for my Vizio.

Overall my suggestion is head on down to www.avsforum.com and read up there. They have more TV discussions than you can read in a lifetime. Stick with the LCD discussions as in your size range you wont find anything better and more useful than an LCD panel.

Westinghouse 42" at Best Buy for $999.

You wont find any better deal at that price. My brother actually bought this a couple of months ago and it's pretty awesome. Nothing compared to my 50" DLP TV, but he did pay like $400 less.

For the best blacks and color reproduction, the Sony 34XBR970 is going to be the best out...but, it's only 34", and it's one heavy tube TV. It also tops out at 1080i, and even that it converts to tube resolution.

Probably a nice plasmo or LCD is what you're looking for though...

I think that 42" is only 720p though, isn't it? I know you can get the 37" 1080p at newegg for $999.

Yeah it's only 720p, but I think 720p is more than enough for everyday Xbox/TV usage.

Plus the OP didnt say whether he wanted 720p or 1080p. I was just trying to give him the most screen for his money. :)

Yeah, you're right there. That is a heck of a lot of tv for the price. I keep thinking in terms of pc monitor; I wouldn't touch 720p for that.

edit: although, if he is considering hd/bluray at some point in the future, he may want to seriously consider if it's worth the extra few hundred for 1080p.

Depends on your budget - Sony x series is best quality LCD, but Sharp Aquos (LC42XD1E) is currently best v4m, does 1:1 pixel mapping as well.

Get the Westinghouse 37" 1080P. Think of it as a really big monitor, not a TV. You'll be happy.

I have the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player and I've seen it in action in both 720p and 1080p and I can honestly say IMHO that 1080p is not worth the price premium. Especially since 1080p is worthless when watching cable or satellite since nothing you're ever going to receive in the next decade is going to be 1080p content.

If the OP wanted to use this as a computer monitor, then I would say get the 37" 1080p monitor, but he indicated that it would be mainly for Xbox 360 and some TV usage. As I said before, I have a 720p screen and a 1080p screen and I dont think he'll notice that huge of a difference playing Xbox 360 as long as he's sitting at optimal viewing distances.

It would help a lot if he would give us a budget.

Glad I found this thread. I'm looking to buy a 40 or 42" LCD HDTV soon, and currently the best choice for me seems to be the Westinghouse LVM-42W2 - 42" 1080p. Amazon has it for $1290 plus shipping ($30-$60 depending on speed to CA).

I realized between my tivo, xbox360, and dvd player that I don't need a tuner. I'm primarily buying it for the xbox and to watch tv, but I may hook it up to my computer someday and try some fps gaming. So, I'd like it to have 1080p. The negatives I read about are the very slow remote and non existant customer service.

My budget is also $1500. Would you agree with my choice, or suggest a better alternative? I used to own a Samsung TX-P3271H (crt hdtv) before I moved. I'm hoping the picture will be as good if not better than on my old tv, right?

Forget about CRT or DLP TVs, boob tubes and projection tvs are ancient technology. LCD or Plasma is better since they're digital, at their native resolution they're going to have much better picture than CRT. So I think you should go with either LCD or Plasma.

For LCD, you can't go wrong with JVC 40" model. It will run you about $1800 in stores like Video Only. Concidered one of the best among LCDs. It's a 1080 screen but I'm not sure it it can actually accept 1080P or if it's 1080I signal only.

For Plasmas, if you got space I would recomment Panasonic 50". It's a 720 screen but if you got space and are going to sit far enough back you probably won't see much difference. Should run you about $1600. If you're tight on space, then go for Panasonic 42" plasma or similar. Panasonic plasmas are very highly regarded in the video world.

Don't go to BB or anything like that, go to a dedicated video/audio store where employees know what they're talking about. Compare and see which type of TV you like more, LCD or Plasma. Often times these stores can give you a kick ass financing too.

Personally I own a Hitachi 42" 42HDT79 Plasma. Paired with OPPO DV-981HD upconverting DVD player it gives me an incredible picture. Its resolution of 1024x1080 is higher than that of Panasonic's 1024x768 of same size so it will be better at displaying 1080I signal. It also features motorised swivel, 3 HDMI inputs, and a sweet remote with click wheels (like on pc mice) for audio and channel surfing. Cost me a little over $1500 this past christmas so it's a bit on a spendy side among plasmas.

Check out LCD Forum at AVS

Check out Plasma Forum at AVS

Then go and check TVs out for yourself. Make sure the place has a good return policy so if you don't like the TV after couple weeks, you can bring it back and get yourself a different one.

Then when you see a TV you like come back to AVS and read up on what people are saying about it.

Things to keep in mind when deciding which technology to go with:

LCDs generally have a higher resolution so they also work pretty good as a pc monitors, they don't reflect light (big plus during those winter days when sun shines right into your window and not even blinds help), slower response time, cheaper warranty, picture quality not as good unless you go with high end LCD like the one I mentioned.

Plasmas have fast response times, vibrant colors, lower resolution (but they still manage to look incredible), screen is made of glass so it reflects light, blacks are generally better, I think they consume more power. They're also heavier.

Anyway, I got carried away and made a big deal out of a simple question. Ooops.

Fox xb360, my vote goes to Plasma 42" which is exactly what I've got to use with my 360.
Great black, great colors and fast response time.

The 47 Inch Gallevia, GV47LFHDTV

My only complaint is it wont take 1080p over VGA without fiddling in power strip. But with 2 component and 2 HDMI inputs that will take 1080p easily, its pretty forgivable. Also the internal tuner is actually quite nice.
