Best HDTV for $900?

I made this same post a few weeks ago with a $1500 budget, but the wife spent money on (what I would consider) insignificant stuff.

Anyway, I have $900 to work with, I need the best (biggest?) HDTV I can afford for that price. I'd appreciate the help of good ol' reliable ATOT.

I have two couches for this TV, one sits about 6 feet away, the other about 15 feet away. I plan to connect a mac mini or a windows media PC to the TV to play content from the computer. So... I think that means the TV should have a vga or dvi input.

I need to have this TV at my house by NO LATER than 8 days from now (friday jan-12th)

you can easily get a decent 40 incher for that much, too bad you dont have the 1500 budget anymore though 🙁 then you really coulda got something nice.

My parents got a new 42" flatscreen plasma hd tv from home depot. I think like 960 new 10% off with the credit card ended up like 800 somtin. Good deal im pretty sure its a panasonic.

Samsung 46" DLP HL-S4666W

$999 shipped from Amazon so its just like a $900+tax.

That or I'd go to Costco and they got a Vizio 42" plasma for $1099.

If you can't budge on the $900 tag, you'll have to settle for a 37" LCD.
Outpost has a 37" Olivia for $647(it was free shipping last week).
It doesn't have a tuner but you wouldn't need it if you get your HD contents from subscriptions.

Why in the hell is that Samsung so cheap? I don't see a tuner on it, and it looks to be a slightly older model, but a 46" DLP for $1000 is pretty damn cheap.

EDIT: I'm in the same boat, looking to get a HD TV for around the same price tag.

Beat me to it, those were my exact recommendations! 😀

Thanks CTrain, I think I'm going to go with that 46" DLP.

but fyi it will be $999+ tax for me, ~= $1,080 🙁

I think I can fork out the extra dough, looks like a sweet TV

Why ??
Amazon is in I think Kentucky so you shouldn't be paying tax unless you live there.
And YES, that Samsung has both NTSC/ATSC tuner.

Is that a QAM tuner? (Sorry I'm unfamiliar with the terms) 🙁 Why is it so cheap though? I was browsing the store the other day...46" ones certainly didn't go for that cheap.

heh no dark room.

and CTrain, I'm in WA state, and I believe amazon ships from Seattle where I live, unfortunately 🙁

"Total: $1,080.99" ordering now!

Don't believe so.

Its been this cheap since teh holiday season.
LCDs and Plasmas prices have been dropping so DLPs prices have fallen deeper.
Its a fairly new DLP too. Only out since May 06.
Good reviews at Amazon.

HOLD UP !!!

This is another vendor through Amazon thats cheaper but charges shipping.
HERE at $949

Try that...they might not charge tax and the total price might still be $1000.

too late

shipping would be ~$95 from them it looks like.

i'd rather have it come through amazon, worth the extra ~$40

I agree with the DLP recommendations but getting it within 8 days is cutting it close.

We love our Toshiba 50" DLP but I wish I had waited.

For the same price we paid, you can buy a Samsung 50" 1080p DLP 🙁

samsung looks like a good bet. just check out the discount/wholesale stores like costco or sams, especially on such a tight budget. best of luck

the problem with going to costco or sams is that you end up walking out with a TV... and you find out when you get home that it doesn't necessarily have the best specs, or it has X problem that you didn't read about...

Get a sd projector. It will take in HD signals and it will look great. Can be had for under $900 with a screen and can go over 100 inches.

not sure if there is a Fry's by you, but they have a JVC 61" 720p set w/ matching stand for $999 in today's ad (according to the thread at FW, many of the Fry's locations have this deal going on)...

A CRT, probably a 30" Toshiba (costco had it for $500 1080/720/480) or if you get lucky a 34" Sony for $1,000 but you may find it on sale for less.

Instead of settling on the best you can get for XX dollars, why don't you save your money and get the ideal solution in a couple months?

So you can't write down the model number, go research it, and come back and buy it? It's a lot easier returning a TV to Costco or Sams than getting one returned back to Amazon that's SHIPPED to you.
