i asked SUPERDELL what a good hdd would be for a high fsb...i thought the 60GXP......this is the reply......

What are you doing with it? The IBM 40GB drive is the best one on the planet at the moment so it doesn?t really matter what you want to do that would be my recommendation. I know it works kick butt for DV editing and such amongst other things. If you are not happy with it you can always bring it back. I would love for you to show me if there is a better drive out there though because I am not currently aware of one.

IDE: WD's 100 GB/7200 RPM/8 MB cache
SCSI: Seagate Cheetah X15 (I believe there's an 8 MB version of it as well)

[EDIT]I didn't pick these for their FSB capabilities, but for their performance.[/EDIT]

IBM just released their 120GXP line of HDDs. These drives are probably faster than the 60GXPs. Some other drives have higher sustained transfer rates (Maxtor 740DX, WD BB, Seagate Baracuda IV). However, they don't really seem to perform much better in most applications.

I have one of the 120GXP's and they are fast!:) Tell "STUPERDELL" to check it out for himself!;) There are numerous drives by many companies which blow his recommondation away by a large margin!

I checked this guys site and product offerings out.............seems like a rich kid wanna be preying on people whom don't know any better IMHO..........:( I especially liked his claim in the thread in OT last week..............wish he'd offer my $1G if I could build a faster system...........;)

What were his specs on his SUPERDUPERSUPERDELL system again???????;)
Also, how high are we talking as far as the FSB is concerned??? I've personally had great luck with IBM's & Maxtors.........not so much with WD's.........

I don't know if the 60GXP is the best way to go. I have a 75GXP which wrote some bad sectors once I hit a 160MHz FSB. The 60GXP is very similar to the 75 series. However, if you get the proper motherboard, it doesn't really matter. The IWill XP333 v2.1 (ALi MAGiK1 Rev.C chipset) will allow you to overclock your FSB without running the PCI bus too far out of spec. The SIS745 chipset will allow the same thing.

the Iwill drops your performance by about 30% once the 1/5 divider kicks in...so not much of a diff running at 133 & 166

i have heard the GXP75 is a horrible drive...the anand artice on it is bad....
i want to get my fsb up to around 170+...the pci bus will be way up there...that is why i am looking for a drive that can take it =)

Welll....LOL! I wouldn't go with a 75GXP either..............but, I've read reviews, and as I said, I have a 120GXP and they are about the fastest you can buy right now. I have no problems going with the IBM's on these new drives, I only bought a few 60GXP's though as they were basicly an interim until the 120GXP's because of the 75GXP problems.

Maxtor would be my next choice and I also run a few of the D740X's. Never messed with Seagate a whole lot, but, I do know from what I've heard and read that they are also some fine drives. I personally have had terrible luck with WD's both in my systems and systems I've built for people........in fact I have two being returned for me on RMA's for peoples systems..........:( I have heard a lot of praise for the new "special edition" WD drives, but, I just can't bring myself to try another after my bad luck with them until IBM or Maxtor begins failing for me.

NO! Not StuperDell! Please, please, don't rely on his "judgement" for your purchasing needs. As far as I'm concerned his judgement is more than slightly impaired. I mean, for @#$#@'s sake, he still uses SBLive! 5.1 OEMs in EVERY model of his PCs, even the one that costs $2600! Everything he uses is "the best on the whole planet!" and if you try to use anything else, you're "retarded" (and yes, he really does use such idiotic terms, truly). Imbecile...

First off, as another Salt Laker, I'm doing you a favor by stating that:
1. Super Dell is a complete and total jackass who knows absolutly nothing about computers (there are plenty of people on this very site that could give you better advice that that hoser)
2. He's smoking crack if he thinks people doing "video editing" are using 40 gig drives.
3. The best EIDE hard drive money can buy right now is the Western Digital WD1200JB (120 Gigs, 8 meg cache, guaranteed to burn any 40 gig drive on a desktop). The best SCSI drive is (like someone before me mentioned) the Seagate Cheetah 15,000 rpm drive in the 36 gig version, although the 18 gig drive is fast too.

My experiences with Ultimate computers have been iffy at best, and I see no reason why someone who has the ability to build a computer and use "search" tools on the internet should pay some 'tard like Superdell money to build a computer.

Lastly, I just don't like the guy. He's a dork.

Not sure if you can actually afford it, but the BiTMICRO 73GB solid-state hard drive is plenty good. :D THe UW SCSI version is even better (and then there's the fiber channel one).

Have you tried the forums over at http://www.overclockers.com/?

No site can come out with a review of hdd that can take a high pci bus
because that is too generic a criteria to qualify with. You have to
factor in the controller, chipset, and probably even the type and length
of cabling used to connect the drives to the system. All of those
come into play to affect the timing of

The "same drive" you can purchase from three diffent places might also
have been manufacturered in three different batches/places. That alone
can give dramatic differences in results if tested for overclock performance.

You also don't mention which "40G IBM drive" he was referring to.
IIRC, 40G drives can be found in each generation from the Deskstars
thru to the 120GXP, which is a rather large range of drive designs to
choose from in itself, without even looking at drives from other
manufacturers.
