best HD recovery software?

i'm using an external enclosure to house a 160GB ATA HD. i can turn it on an access some files but for the most part when i try to open a file or folder my computer hangs (until i shut the HD off) or says the information is corrupt.

which brings me to the question what recovery program is the best? or is there a better way to not lose everything? thanks.

I tried going the knoppix way but it seems that it can't write to ntfs. I'm trying another route, but not having much luck 🙁
