I think Maxtor's quality has fallen off considerably. I have Seagate and have heard good things about Seagate, especially the 5-year warranty. I have also heard good things about IBM, but I think they are getting out of the hardware biz. What other experiences have people had?

I certainly feel a bit more confident to see that WD maintains a 5-year warranty on at least some of its drives. I think Maxtor is down to 1 year on most of theirs.

My personal experience with Maxtor has been okay, but bad more recently. Just had one die after only 15 months. Maxtor would not offer to help me at all.

IBM drives started going south before they moved manufacturing to Hitachi. I've not seen any improvements since then (can't say they've gotten worse, but no better). I've yet to have a Seagate drive fail on me. I've not had any of my own WD drives go bad, but I have seen one die on a customer. WD was more then willing to work with me on getting the replacement drive fast (less than a week) and then send them back the dead/malfunctioning drive within a reasonable time frame. Maxtor now owns Quantum, which I've had the circuit boards pop on (litterly pop when the board blows a chip) essentially killing the drive (not worth the $2,000+ for data recovery).

I'd use either Seagate or Western Digital drives in a build with confidence. Of course, I won't use any drive that doesn't have at LEAST a 3 year warranty on it. Seagate's 5 year warranty is just another place they shine. Especially since that's across all their drives now, not just specific model numbers.

I'm a Seagate & WD fan.

It seems Seagates are the faves here on AT, & have good warrantees, but i've never had any trouble with my WDs, & i am able to always find hot deals on the WDs, so i have a few of them as well.

I do avoid Maxtors though, since i know too many people who have had issues with them.

Best comes by warranty backup so go with the Seagates or Raptors 5yr...I think Samsung maybe doing it to
