Best HardDrive?

Hi all,
My hd crashed this week (isn't even recognized by mobo) and I'm looking at getting a big one (around 40gb). Can anyone tell me the best bang for the buck is? I think Maxtor is the best so far in my research, can anyone second that?

Argh, all my MP3's are gone (or at least most...) and just when I was planning to backup! Hopefully Napster's still in business by the time I get my new hd... 😛

The one site to check... <---Look here. I just set up two of my friends with 75gxp 45 gig IBM's. Fastest IDE drive I've had the pleasure to play with. However, visit the forums at storage review and ask there. Those guys REALLY know their hardware.

I second that, I personally prefer IBM drives only because the IBM customer service has been great to me but the Maxtor drives are no slouch and is cheaper than IBM. Dont get fooled by this IBM is faster or quieter than Maxtor drives bull#@#@. Both drives are good.

Yep... Right now the best HDs are IBM ones... in terms of both speed and quality, you can't go wrong with IBM...

I would absolutely recommend an IBM harddisk. I have two IBM 75GXP 45 GB in my computer. They are a cheap, fast and not especially noisy and you also get a 3-year warranty.
Get an IBM!

Oh please give it up, use the seach function, there have been dozens of these discussions, and they all turn to flames after a while. The concensous here is about 5/10 IBM, 4/10 Maxtor, and 1/10 something else ususally. I say go with with the cheapest of one of those two, but to educate yourself some more, search for it and you'll find many, many, many threads on this already.

Any of you guys hear about the notorious IBM problems with the GXP line? I've been reading on the discussions and their seems to be a general consensus that the failure rate of these are pretty high relative to other drives. I've only used two so far (only for three weeks as well), thus I haven't experienced this.

I second the Maxtor. I use Maxtor and IBM, but Maxtor seems to work as well, run as quiet and is a few bucks cheaper.

I got the cash to buy a new drive and will be doing so saturday. That new drive will be a maxtor. The reveiws I read say it finds files faster thus making it faster than the IBM. Not to mention 30 bucks cheaper. But that price is at my local shop.

The board should be coded so whenever anyone under Senior Member tries to post a "best" thread title it will take them to the forum search or FAQ 😉

Like you need more responses, but I love my twin IBM 75GXPs, wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

The Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 60 are also good drives.

A note about the return rate of the IBM's... we ordered about 95 new Dell Optiplex machines 4mo's back..since then I have had Hard drives(IBM) gone bad since then...It seems that at this point these drives are on back order (about 2 weeks) at the dell support center.. got maxtors as replacements for all the drives... apart from that they are great drives.. quiet and fast, the batch we have are the 20Gb 7200 rpm ones. personally I have 1 maxtor(30gb 7200rpm), 3 quantums(30gb 7200rpm 15gb 5400rpm 6.4gb ?rpm scsi), 1 toshiba (1gb ?rpm scsi) and 2 fugitsu (6.4gb ?rpm 4.2gb ?rpm) drives
