Best Hard Drive to buy?

Okay

Today my hard drive crashed for the 6th time in around 4 years.
I am tired changing hard drive because none of them seem to stand the test of time.

I've had IBM, Maxtor and Seagate and all of them end up crashing before 1 year of use or even quite soon (3 months) for the maxtor.

What hard drive do you use?
What manufacturer do you think is the most reliable?

Since I am going to buy a new hard drive might as well buy something good.
What would you suggest?

Budget is not too tight so SATA is definitely on the list.

Thanks for you help and advice.

Well, besides IBM, Maxtor and Seagate are definetely good choices still among hard drives. Especially seagate. I have used a maxtor and had it die on me too, but since the RMA i've been all good with it.

I'm looking at some HD's right now too, but I'm leaning towards external right now(i just saw a 400gb one from seagate...and it's nice), so sorry I can't list any internal HD's right off the top of my head. I haven't been keepin' up. I can put in a vouch for WD Raptors though.

Dude, that's just bad luck.

Seagate has the best reputation overall for being most reliable. I'd have to say go with a Seagate again.

maxtor I am not surprised, they don't ever reach 1 year. But I rarely hear of Seagates crashing.

better luck next time round with your new hard drive.. LOL

I too, am wondering why so many hard drives (from different companies) keep creshing on your system. I haven't had one hard drive crash when in my possesion. My daughter had one malfuntion after I gave her the computer (Seagate) but after I formatted it and loaded software if has been flawless. Are all of your crashed hard drives in one system or are you talking about multiple computers?

I certainly agree that seagate is high standard when it comes to HDs.

What about samsung? anyone? They had a 3 year warranty before Seagate went to 5.
They have excellent reviews in Newegg.

Also, are you sure that it is a hardware failure, could be a piece of software crashing your system.

I've had only one hard drive that died on me. Fortunately it gave me some warning so that I could back up and replace it. That drive was a Western Digital and it lasted me about five years. I've only owned Western Digital drives and I like them. They are quiet enough for me and I've had good service from them. For external drives I went with Seagate (120 and 200 GB). They are very quiet and they run cool.

Boot sequence is stopped after I tried to reboot.
I can hear a buzz and a click on the hard drive.

I honestly believe that Seagate make a great drive, they just never made one for me. I've had 5 over the years and only 2 lasted more than a year. Others only ditch them after they become too old or slow to be of much use. Maxtor, one of the most loathsome (if you read user experiences) drives made, has served me well. I have several at home and at work that are 3 to 6 years old and working fine. I moved to Samsungs a while back when warranties on many other drives dropped to a year. So far I like them just fine and they feel solid, for what ever that might be worth. Unless I use hundreds of different brands over time I couldn't begin to have an idea which one would be the absolute best. Most people tend to go with what has worked well in the past. At the odd end of the drive spectrum I would buy Samsung or Maxtor if I needed one tonight. Yep, it's a pretty odd choice.

Just wondering, do you have the computer in a warm room or maybe more dust than usual area/part of the house?

The computer is in my office, the AC does not run all the time.
Computer only runs when the AC is on.

The dust is not unsually high in quantities...

I've been seriously thinking about a HD cooler.

However two of the hard drives I've had, died at a very cool location.

Still wondering what everyone likes the most and considers the most reliable.

Personal experience, none failed on me yet: ibm, hitachi, samsung, maxtor, seagate, and wd's.

quick read thru different forums/sites: seagates are more popular (not necessarily makes it best) and more people have problems with maxtors (hard to accept based on my favorable experience with them from the 4GB to new 300GB.

Only drives I have ever had fail have been maxtors... have a WD 30 GB that is approaching 6 years old, and its acting up a lil, but still running. My next drives are going to be WD and Seagate most likely, for what thats worth

The only hard drive that I had that die was a Maxtor. I've been buying Western Digitals ever since (I have four). My next choice would have been Seagate.

Okay,

I guess that is a good hypothesis.

I currently have an Enermax Whisper 350W.
I previusly had a 3dcool.com 300W PS (about 3 years ago).

Why do you think my PS would crash the HDs?

If you're not concerned about price, I would get two 74 GB 10,000 RPM WD Raptors, and span them.

Fast, enterprise class, SATA, NCQ, 5 year warranty...

No, but that's the price of high performance. ;)

They are quite a bit quieter then the older 36 GB version though.

Maybe you got a heat problem buring your drives up? How well vented in your case?

I'd get samsung or seagate...

It could be the PS but then I've had old Antec 300Ws before with no problem... nevertheless... I would still stick with a Seagate.

That is a good point. If you do get a Raptor, you will need active cooling on the drive(s).
