Just finished my handgun classes. I am thinking about getting a gun cause it is just too fun. I fired 6-7 different weapons, I personally like 45s. I especially liked the Glock 21. I tried the Glock 19, and the grip was too small for my hand, I was overpowering the gun (lack of experience I'm sure). Also did a Colt 45 (model 1911 I think). Other than the 22 that we started with, the 45 was my most accurate gun. What is the best handgun that you have fired and why?

Glock is by far the most durable, and the most accurate. That is why so many cops are issued them.
Second on the Glock.

Glocks and Sig Sauers are my favorites. The old Colt 1911 and Beretta 92 are also worthy sidearms.

I am leaning toward a Glock. I checked the prices on my way out of the range, and for the money, the Glock is a wicked piece. I must say that shooting is addictive.

Glocks are durable and reasonably accurate for the money. IMO the best .45s are the Heckler & Koch USP .45 Compact and the Sig P220. I personally prefer the traditional DA/SA setup to the Glock-style all-double-action setup.

One of the HUGE problems I had with the DA/SA setups was that first shot. Our instructor (dad took class with me) would NOT let us pull back the hammer. He insisted that the first shot was always single action. It really threw me off. I'm sure with time I could get used to it.
Question: When you bought your handgun, were you allowed to fire it before deciding? Did they have a demo model? I would consider other guns, but I do not want to buy a piece that I am not sure I will even like.

I like theHeckler & Koch firearms also.I go woth the sub-compacts though since I have small hands.Though if I could get one I would take the MP5.
I own a S & W model 3913 9mm a very nice gun. It's accurate and at under 1" thick, a nice carry piece. Unfortunately, I'm getting rid of it, but not because of it's quality. I'm against S & W recent agreement with the federal government. They s*ck, but they still do have nice guns for a decent price. I have shot my friend's Sig 9mm, now that's a fine weapon. I love the SA trigger pull, it's a far better feel than my S & W. I plan on getting a Sig 9mm for home defense real soon. For my everyday carry piece, I just got a Beretta Tomcat .32ACP. In fact, I'm planning on firing it for the first time today. When buying a handgun, consider what you're going to mainly use it for. Some ranges have "range weapons" that you can "try before you buy". Just remember, if you plan on doing alot of "plinking", 9mm ammo is rather expensive unless you buy in bulk. I'd have to agree with the others, H & K are probably the best, but Glocks can hold their own too. Sigs and H & K are IMO the safest choice for a nightstand weapon in the home.
Colt 1911 .45ACP, reliable and accurate. There are millions of aftermarket parts for modifications if it suits you. You just can't overclock it! Ammo is not exactly cheap tho.

I thought I'd mention a point nobody has brought up yet. The "fit" to your hand is essential. It should fit your hand like a glove. Now, depending on what pistol you decide on, you can purchase different grips to fit your hand better. I'm quite fond of the Hogue Overmold grips. They're a nice durable rubber that soaks up recoil and allows your hand a firm grip on the gun. If you decide on the .45 ACP, I would recommend the Hornady 185 gr. XTP bullets--they'll flatten anything you hit with them.

The Sig SigPros seem really nice for the money. They do not make a .45, but there is a 9mm and a .40 S&W, which is a potent caliber as well. The thing is, 9mm and .45 ammo are both much cheaper and more readily available.
Depending on where you live there may be a firing range where you can rent several guns and shoot them to see what you like. Here in Oklahoma they are as common as McDonald's!

I have my eye on the Sigs... I hope I get the chance to fire one. I am thinking that maybe they have demo models available, dunno though.
