AMD does well across the GPU stack. the R9 290X puts up a good fight against GTX 970 (GTX 970 is 4% slower) but because of power efficiency the GTX 970 wins out. the R9 290 and R9 280 are very attractive bang for buck cards. You could grab a R9 290 for as low as USD 270 (250 if rebates are counted) and a R9 280 for as low as USD 170 (close to USD 150 with rebates).

Curious that Techspot, on a bench where the 290X is faster than the 980 at 1080p they rely on the 1440p score to say that the 980 is faster but in another game where it s the opposite situation they point the 1080p score, where the 980 is better, to say that the latter is faster, talk of double standard...

oh ok. Anyway the GTX 980 is for the crowd which wants bragging rights and the best perf at any cost. For the value minded person (and I might add the smarter consumer) the GTX 970, R9 290X and R9 290 are the options.

Since i look scrupulously at perf/price before anything else it looks like the R290 is in a class of its own in this respect, given the perfs deltas anything other than this card has noticeably lower perf/price.

I agree with Abwx once again. While I strictly forbid myself from buying or supporting anything AMD, the fact remains that the R9 290 is the king for greatest bang-for-your-buck GPU.

Power consumption is irrelevant in North America as we pay a mere 14 cents per kWh.

Depends how much you want to spend. For best bang or top preformance in the world.
