Best Graphics card in $300 to $500 range?

My friend is in need of a new graphics card (for his yet to be created system!), and to play games he is willing to spend $300 to $500 for quality. Curious, what would be the best card in that price range? This is not to start a war--I'm just curious what you think so I can better aid my friend in selecting his new graphics card.

🙂

if you want to stay on the lower/mid end of that price range, the 6800GT ranges from 350-400. If you want to max out the price range, the X800XT and 6800 Ultra can be had for about 479.

If he is playing games like HL2, Nascar, etc, then get the X800XT.

If the majority of games he plays are "Best on nvidia games" like NFSU2, Doom 3, etc, then go for the 6800 GT or Ultra, depending on the amount you want to spend.

If he just plays a mix of all types of games, you really can not go wrong with any choice. There will be games made for both.

with that budget your gonna have the pick of the crop when it comes to graphics, i would go with what OrangeParktech just said. you cant fall off with any of these cards

just make sure though dont get the x800pro

you wanna be looking 6800gt, 6800ultra, x800xt, possibly x850xt? (if its not price gouged to hell) and you'll be good to go

If he is building a PCI-e rig, then the prices i quoted are all too low. If he is building an AGP rig (I assume he is) the X850 is PCI-e only if im not mistaken.

he never said what he was building so i just listed all

So did I 🙂

Good choice i think. I scored one for 459.00 off of newegg, and sold my 9800 Pro to my co-worker for 150 bucks. So, all in all, i am happy with the price i paid.

I think he'll really enjoy it.

Let us know.
