Got a buddy who plays with a 1366x768 32" TV as his Monitor.

He has a GT 240 and wants a new card that will play modern titles at 60FPS+ Cranked all the way up at 768p

is a 768MB 460 a good choice for him? or would it be more beneficial to recommend something like a 570 to give it more life? He's running a i7 950 CPU @ 4.0GHz

He has me thinking about upgrading my Video card (sell him mine) too even though I'm happy with it, mind you I've only played Mafia II and Just Cause 2 with the new Desktop build so far

A GTX 460 would be perfect -- it's overkill now, but should be good for new engines like id tech 5 and Crysis 2. If you keep yours a Hot Deal on a 768MB would be enough.

Im thinking about selling him my card and getting a 570

I had 2 6950's and a 1090T setup before, but wanted a all new system and Case, so I sold it as a complete PC and started from scratch.

I went with the 460 as a I got a wicked deal on it. I prob could sell it for more used than I paid new.

he has a very strong cpu and would be able to fully utilize any card. nothing wrong with a gtx460 at that res if he wants to crank the settings in games. 1366x768 is a pretty low res so I would just go with the 768mb model.

I hate how people use "overkill" on these forums. There is no reason not to buy a video card that is balanced with your computer unless you have to pay a premium for performance you don't need yet. This is not the case with a 460. There is really no premium for this card.

There will ALWAYS be a need for more rendering power regardless of resolution. Years ago people were saying that a GeForce 4 was overkill for 800x600. Do you think a GeForce 4 will be able to run Crysis at 800x600. No, it can't. Similarly an overclocked 460 won't be able to play Crysis 50 at 640x480 resolution.

Buy whats balanced regardless of resolution unless there is a premium for it.

in 1 year I have gone from a V5 5500 which I paid $250 for and sold for $65 to a Gainward GF2 Ti450 which I paid $125 for and sold for $70 to a GF2 Ti500 Golden Sample which I got a sweet deal on (which is why I even bothered switching from my GF2 ti450)

Now of course i am thinking of upgrading to a GF3 ti200 or ti500 (not even thinking about the GF4 cards yet, too much $$)

So is there any real reason that we all keep upgrading these cards. Sure i get better scores in 3dMark2001...but can I REALLY see any difference in the actual GAMES I play? I am usually running 800x600 res anyway. Is all this upgrading done to be the king of the 3dmark hill?

so what's the point?

ps. Game I play...Empire Earth (are there any other worthwhile?)
If you're still playing games on 15" monitors at 800x600, all the newest video cards are overkill for you. People with 21"+ monitors are the ones that need the extra fillrate so they can play in decent resolutions on their big screen monitors. I know the War3 beta at 1280x960 with 2x FSAA looks absolutely gorgeous on my 21" Trinitron. When I tried dropping it down to 1024x768 2x FSAA, everything looked to blurry and not very sharp.

it's not overkill if you like having the absolute max settings in games. I'm using a 5870 for a 1440x900 screen (which I am perfectly happy with). If he already has an i7, than I'd say why not to a 570. Anything along the 460 range is good as well.

you are being beyond silly in some of your comment but yes the gtx460 is fine for him. technology changes fast so by the time a gtx460 cant handle nearly every game maxed at 1366x768 we will have gone through several new gpus anyway. so yeah thats why you buy whats appropriate now and upgrade to a newer card when you need too.

He wants maximum framerates at maximum settings... he'll want all the GPU-power he can get even at that low resolution. There are a good number current games, when maxed out, which won't do 60 FPS at that resolution on a GTX 460 level card, and this list will grow as more games come out (Crysis 2).

The sky's the limit, IMO. He should get the fastest card he feels comfortable spending the money on. If you give him a good deal on your 460 then I can see how that would appeal to him, but he can certainly benefit from an even faster card.

Yea , that right lets all recommend him a gtx580 and he should be good for years @ 768p. :(. What a load of crap. :)

He should just grab a gtx 460 768mb for 100$.

If he can afford it then by all means I see why not.

I don't get the overkill stuff either. Why? Do you look at GPUZ and you see 15% utilization you somehow feel you spent too much on the card? :awe:
