Best GPU Cooler on the market?

So, I recently acquired an X1900XTX with a VF700 HSF installed on it. After running a bunch of games, including oblvion, I noticed the most excessively hot temperatures occuring with Titan Quest. I am monitoring temps using the Catalyst Control Center on my second monitor. If I play Titan Quest with no air conditioner on in my room, it will throttle.

While playing Titan quest w/the air conditioner on, the GPU core jumps to 75 degrees immediately from my idle temp of 45 Degrees. It then crawls up 1 degree every 20 seconds or so, and doesnt stop until 101C. In reference, my Opteron is idling at 32 degrees, and loads during titan quest at 46. The case is big and roomy and has good cooling overall, and there is a blower fan directly above my X1900XTX to exhaust heat from the VF700. During gameplay, the air coming out of the blower is noticeably warm.

I am using Artic Silver 5 on the HSF, thin layer, even contact. I thought maybe the original owner simply did a bad job installing the HSF before, but my temps only went down 2 degrees from his install. Plus, the second I alt-tab out of titan quest, the temps drop 20-25 degrees immediately, leading me to believe that the VF700 is removing heat well, it just cant handle it at full load.

Basically, I am begining to think that the VF700 he installed is simply not enough Heatsink for an X1900XTX, so I am wondering, is there anything that can actually tame this beast??? I know the Stock HSF can cool it better, but its loud as heck, and not worth it for me.

I am thinking of going for a VF900, since I have noticed that according to specs the VF700 isnt actually rated to be used on an X1900XTX according to zalman's website. Another option I have seen is the all-in-one waterblock units on the market, which use water to pipe heat from the card to another PCI slot and exhaust it out the back. However they seem excessive to me, and I dont know how much better they could do than a VF-900

Those temperature changes seem huge, but if thats what the sensor is saying, then maybe they're right.

I've got a VF900 (with AS Ceramique) on my 7900GT which is a much cooler card than your 1900XTX, but for what its worth, im idling at 38 C right now, and even on full load, it only goes up to 52. It was a sizeable improvement over the stock cooler in terms of temperature, and it is nearly silent even running at 12V. I say go for the VF900 and see if it helps you with that beast of a card.

My biggest problem, is that im idling nice and low, and then it explodes during gaming, and drops back down to idle temps really quickly as soon as I stop gaming. To me that sounds like it is removing the heat, just not as much as my card makes during load, because if it wasnt, it would stay hot even after I stop gaming right?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the fan is hooked up to a 12V line, it never spins down. Also, I reseated the heatsink once, with no change in temps. Both times it was well attatched, and ive installed more than enough CPU HSF's to do it properly.

I think the VF700 just isn't up to it. The VF900 would be a big improvement, or possibly an Accelero X2. I think what's catching you off guard is that the card is not only not under load when you're not gaming, but that it is throttled back to it's lower 2D clocks that the X1900s use when they're not running a 3D application.

Oh, im well aware of the 2D down-stepping, but I the reviews I read of this card say with the stock cooler some people IDLE as high as 70C, then their load temps are 85-90. I really think a VF900 is needed over my VF700, I just wanted to get some outside confirmation of that before I drop 40 bucks.

Stock cooler on X1900XT(X) is your best bet. Beyond that water cooling is the next best thing (at least I think so). That stock cooler at 100% should keep it pretty cool.

100% fan speed = 60dbs = Dust Buster

What you want is the accelero X2.
