what are the down falls and what are the upsides? i see all these different brands more or less have the same features if you are paying around the same price. does anyone have good experience with this or has done any reasearch?

the most interesting one so far i've found was a gps that can act like LO-JACK, which is quite suitable for me, since my car was recently stolen and recovered.

any helpful thought would be appreciated.

I have a Magellan Meridian. It works great as a stand-alone GPS on my dash. It is upgradable using SD memory, so I can upload detailed maps. I have a 64 MB SD memory chip in their now. I have almost all of MO and IL (with topo info) and it is only taking 32 MB.

Of course if you want to use it with a laptop, buying a GPS with upgradeable memory isn't a high priority unless you want to use it by itself. The best with a laptop would be some sort of GPS that can use an external antennae that you can mount on the top of your car. That way you can store your GPS inside a compartment and not have to worry about it, since you'll be playing around with your laptop. My Meridian can't use an external antennae, but I have the Garmin GPS III and V series will.

There is lots of software that will interface with the GPS on your laptop that will show continious updates of where you are.
