For super frequent short trips around town to new locations? Get a good universal smartphone mount and use that (with whatever smartphone you have).

For longer trips, more infrequently, a regular Garmin or something would do fine. Better on battery, pretty much no worries about overheating, but unless you spend a lot, usually a resistive touch screen and slower processor.

I just plug in my phone and use that. I have an iPhone and a Droid Turbo. Either one works great for me.

I used to use a Garmin quite a bit when I was traveling just because it was easy to load speed camera locations into it with warnings as well as red light cameras. I gave it away when I stopped traveling between states as much.
