Just picked up a Hercules GeForce3 64MB Prophet III (for essentially free) in a bundle of other goodies that I am looking to make a very cheap, but decently playable all around rig for a low-income associate stuck on an AMD K6 onboard graphics rig. It's getting paired up with a mobile 2200+ TBredB and an nf2 board.

I have not had a good nvidia card since TNT was king as the main gamer, and there is little info on good drivers these days for a card 4 generations old. Would it be best to stick with older drivers (say Det 44 somethings) that may have been optimized for GF3 better than the newest ones that are probably optimized for GF6 cards? Or is my thinking way out of wack? TIA for the help.

I just upgraded from a Geforce 3. If you are not using Windows XP, don't use the latest drivers from nVidia. They caused problems for me (multiple BSOD and general instability), but of course YMMV. If using Win 98 as I was, go to the driver archive and get version 56.64. If using WinXP disregard what I said and use the latest ones for that OS.

More than likely the system will be under Windows 2000 (as she already has that) until an XP Home deal comes along.

i'd recommend 45.23

had no problems playing DX9 games on that set. i.e. Needfor speed underground 1, Thief 3, Counterstrike Source, etc.
