Some games such as Company of Heroes, NeverWinter Nights 2, and Star Wars RTS.
(gee and I thought my AGP was out of date)

The machine has a P4 2.8, and he will upgrade to 2GB of RAM, so at least his PC will be okay.

http://www.dell.com/content/pr...?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh

The Dell is listed with a PCI Card and a PCIe 1.0 Card. So any real modern card will NOT work. This is what I have been able to dig up.....

Any thoughts???

Wow, PCI FX 5200 reminds me of my "time" with that crappy PCI card back when I was on a Dell with no AGP slot. :(

he needs a new computer most likely to play those games at decent res. barring that, 7600 gt is cheap, low on power consumption, and, uh, did I mention cheap? I sold one for $65 about 4 mos ago on fs/ft, try looking there.

Haha yeah I know.
He has kids, so he cannot splurge like me. ;)
Not sure what you mean on fs/ft though?? I wanted something "new" so that he could go back to the retailer for issues.
I cannot be the support person for all of my friends anymore.

out of those slow cards the x1550 is going to be fastest but im not sure but how much with a PCI card.

See that makes sense to me. I do not remember a 7xxx card made for PCI. Heck I am upgrading my PC at home since it is AGP. LOL.

I am a bit nervous about the X1550 since I did not find many reviews on it.
I may begrudgingly recommend the X1300, since at least I read some reviews on it.

Oh good, thanks for the information.
It looks like whatever flavor of X1550 or X1300 will be fine.

BTW, I checked NeverWinter Nights 2 System Requirements.
- ATI Radeon X1550 (renamed X1300, detuned, "SE") not supported
- NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 LE, XT

WWWAAAYY on the Bottom. I will tell the guy and warn him.

Get a PCI Express x1 card. They are hard to find and pricey for what you get, but they are available. That will smoke ANY PCI card, period.

I have an old PCI GeForce 2 MX. I have no use for it, so if he wants it he can have it for the price of shipping.

Seems you are right!

copy and paste.

bandwidth Gets Bigger
Transfer rate(mbps) ----->faster
PCI express x16---------------->4000
AGP 8X -------->2128
PCI express x8 ------->2000
AGP 4X ---->1064
PCI express x2 -->500
AGP 1X ->266
PCI express x1 ->250
PCI ->133

So I guess I would get the 7300 gt pci-e x1 card

I searched for that card and can't find it. The X1550 is the fastest I could find.

LOL, under the card's features, it actually says:

Compatible for Dell Dimension E310 Desktop

Excellent recommendation! :)

That's not US$. All I can say is, good luck finding one of those in the US.

Instead, consider the x1300 pci-e x1 for $75 (after $20MIR).

To be honest, I would suggest a complete upgrade instead of the path you are following. Buying a $100+ PCI card and 2GB DDR ram is a total waste of money and still probably won't be able to game well at all.

Instead, buy this:
Abit IP35-V + e2140 + 2x1GB DDR2 for $175 (after $30MIR)

Then one of these:
8500GT OC for $60 (after $20MIR)
8600GT for $80 (after $20MIR)

So for about $235-255 you can have a dual core processor, 2GB memory, and a much much much faster video card than you are considering. On the other hand, you could buy this stuff, put it in your box, and sell your friend your AGP setup. :evil:

By the way, that motherboard/cpu should overclock easily to over 2.5GHz on stock cooling so it will provide lots of power if you are willing to play with it a little bit (very easily done, just read the sticky in the cpu forum on C2D overclocking for tips).

Another option is to buy a 16x to 1x pci-e adapter and use a cheaper pci-e 16x card. Or, for the really cheap way out...break out the back tab of a 1x slot and just stick a 16x card in directly. (You'll have to watch for clearance issues with both of these setups though)
