Best gaming video card for around 150.00

I've been looking to upgrade from my ti4200. I play pretty much any new game I can get my hands on, I'm upgrading in anticipation of HL2, and am wondering what the best card I can afford atm is. I'll be using it purely for gaming. A card with a HL2 voucher included would allow me to spend a lil more.

You can't really upgrade from a 4200 for $150... that is the consensus. The 4200 is very close to the 9600 Pro and XT except when AA/AF is enabled. I wouldn't even consider purchasing a 9600 except my 4200 died... so I need to replace it with something comparable or better. I'm going with the 9600XT with HL2 coupon from

linky

for $157

9600xt, but as said it's not a huge improvement except for aa/af use, at least in older games. Newer games should see a little more increase in performance.

Btw, welcome to the forums!

then spend the extra 50 bux and get a real card like the 9700

Save up a bit more and go with one of the high end parts. If HL2 is your main title of interest, get yourself a 9700Pro or 9800 non pro. Sell your Ti4200 for ~$75 if you can to cover the difference in cost, moving to one of the mid tier parts isn't worth it.

Alternately, the next gen of parts should be hitting a month or so prior to HL2, they will likely bring better prices for current parts and perhaps some better mid tier selections that would be a worthy upgrade from a Ti4200.

9600 Pro, the performance will be a little better than the Ti 4600.

I read that the 9600 XT doesn't offer the free HL2.

Have you looked at the GeForce FX 5900SE line? it is a sub-200 dollar card, that boasts quite an impressive transfer rate for its' price. Check it out sometime. (And it comes bundled with "Call of Duty", if you don't already own that, how cool is that!?)

Radeon 9600XT
Not worth it to upgrade to it from a GF4 Ti 4200. I just did that, so I know 🙂. A 9700 Pro would be very much worth it for around $220.
Wait until HL2 actually comes out to pick a card is my advice if you have a functional GF4 Ti 4200.

Yeah, but the FX 5200 and Radeon 9600SE support DX9, and suck.
You don't want to play anything on them, much less the DX9 games they are 'designed for'.
Edit: I knew that...damn brain. Maybe I should proofread posts...

9000 does not support it, its a stripped 8500

If you're getting it for DX9, don't bother wait for the next gen cards releasing soon, they support DX9.1.

If you want DX9 compatability, I'd get nothing under an FX5900 SE or a 9700. Personally, I'd wait for the next generation of cards to hit and then pick up one of today's high end cards cheaply when people go into an upgrade frenzy.
