Best gaming system setup?

What would be the best setup I can get for a gaming system with a reasonable budget? I can get parts cheap but I just want to know what would a good setup, ie CPU + MB and all dat? I just need something that can run most of the current games smoothly and any future games within at least a year?

I'm thinking most of the people will recommend you an nForce2 motherboard like the Asus A7N8X or the EPoX 8RDA+ with a Tbred revision B 1700+ or 2100+ since they can overclock well. You good get a 9500 for pretty cheap and it will last you some time. I've heard about problems with Crucial RAM with nForce2 so I'd suggest getting some Corsair.

That's what I would recommend, except that I've built 2 systems with the 8RDA (non +) using Crucial RAM with no problems.

amish

THat's pretty much what i'm building right now - Epox 8RDA+ and Athlon XP 1700+ TBred, I'm only putting in a GF4 Ti4200 for now.

My friend has P2 2.4, Asus P584T or something like that. 512MB PC-1000 Rambus Ram, with Radeon 9500/9700 Pro, forgot which 1. You think that will be a little overkill? I don't something super fast but then again, I dont want to lag when I'm playing any of the newer games.

IMO that system will run any and all games out from now til 2006 to some degree (assuming you meant P4 2.4ghz... 🙂 ). With relatively small upgrades, 2007 and beyond.

I'm still using a mobo from mid 2000 and a VPU from early 2001. The card at least was far from top of the line when bought and, along with a socket A athlon 800mhz and 640mb PC133 ram, it can even run UT2k3 at an almost playable level 😛

Fixed? 🙂

Yes, it would be overkill (budgetwise). You could get great gaming from a DDR system at a lower price and pay for the video card in with the savings in some cases.

More detail needed than "not super fast." Tell us how much you're looking at spending, roughly. $600? $800?

Well I currently have a mighty celeron 400 with a TNT2 with 192MB RAM. anway I was looking into the range of $600-$700 max.

I second the Nforce 2 boards..

Check this deal out:

Monarch Computer...

Pre-Tested and Setup AMD XP Combos
Motherboard: 110405 - Asus NForce2 A7N8X (LAN) DDR 400
Processor: 120723 - AMD Athlon XP 2400+
*Heatsink Fan: 130990 - TaiSol CGK760172 (AMD Approved)
Memory: 140867 - DDR (333) 2700 - 512 MB Corsair XMS
Thermal Grease: 800018 - Thermal Grease
Warranty: 800033 - Motherboard-CPU Warranty - 1 Year

Total = $412.00

That's a kick ass setup. And the mobo, ram and processor are setup for you, so you will have no problems installing this into your system. Also.. these guys rock. I've dealt with them on a number of occasions and they stand 100% behind their work.

What VPU with that tec699? That's usually the most expensive item...

Here's a setup full of quality hardware for ya, without a monitor, mouse and keyboard (assuming you want to scavenge those from the old system):

Gigabyte VAX1394 mobo: $95
Seagate 80gb 7200.7 HDD: $89
Radeon 9500 Pro: $174
Athlon 1700+ w/Glacialtech HSF & ArcticSilver3: $71
Fortissimo III sound card: $41
Logitech Z340 speakers: $36
Antec SLK3700 case w/350W ps: $74
LiteOn 16x/48x DVDROM: $34
Samsung Floppy: $8
512mb Crucial PC2700 RAM: $70

Total + shipping: around $750

Theoretically, you could save a bunch more by scavenging the case/cdrom/floppy/speakers too 🙂

I heard Nforce2 has decent onboard sound, so yeah, that's a good option. Epox EP-8RDA+ for $94 would be a good buy. Save ya $40 overall too. Could spend the extra on a Radeon 9700 Gold instead of the 9500 Pro 🙂
