Best gaming router?

I presently have a D-link DR 655 and it is getting up in age. Works well but I might be in the market for a new router. I have Comcast as my ISP and I contract for a bumped up speed of 35 megs down and 6 megs up. Have a new Docsis 3 modem from Comcast that also handles phone and high def TV (Triple Play). I connect the Wan from the modem to the DR 655 Wan port and run my 3 computers from the gigabit switches on the rear of the 655. On the 4th switch I patch into a netgear 8 port gigabit switch for other devices ( my wife's computer and a network printer). I also use WIFI for our I Phones and her I Pad.
If I replace the Dr 655 any suggestions on a router with gigabit switches and good WIFI?

Asus Black Diamond is the best router I've used.

Not cheap, but good usually isn't.

In the whole scheme of gaming hardware the Router is Not the most relevant issue.

I like my E4200, except for the fact that AirPlay mirroring makes the whole damn thing crash and burn. There's a workaround, but Cisco seriously needs to fix that bug with new firmware.

I've had great experiences with routers running dd-wrt.

My WNDR3700 and WZR-HP-G300NH are still going really strong. I can easily transfer data at really high throughputs and haven't noticed any latency or disconnects which are a result of the routers.

This. The RT-N66U is miles ahead of anything else I've tried over the years (D-Link DIR-655 and DIR-855, Linksys E4200 v2), especially range and stability at range. Wi-Fi speed is also impressive, but not the best you can get.

Just remember that WiFi works two way's. What's on the other end makes all the new tech unusable if it can not work the same speeds.
With that being said, I just picked up a new Asus RT-N66U and I am still "dialing" it in. I like what it's doing for me so far. Both my laptops have 2.4/5GHz bands thou. Working on getting the Sony Blue Ray Receiver on the 5GHz band is another story.

virtually any router will do just fine if you can setup QoS.

i'm running a WRT54GL with Tomato and it's plenty beefy for QoS rules on my VoIP and pushing certain ports/protocols to the main machine, NAS, and HTPC. The level of customization is simply nuts with Tomato. Quite powerful too

Thanks for all the input. I moved the DIR 655 upstairs. Had it downstairs (finished basement). Changed the wireless to 802.1 n and g only and repositioned the antennas. Big improvement.
