I have a friend who has parents willing to shell out $3.5k (!!!) for a gaming based computer. My question is; money is obviously no object. Which of the 1.5 trillion gaming oem builders offers the best quality product, and more importantly, the best service? My own suggestion to him was to go to a reputable small business and have them custom build it; if it's anything like the store I work at, the service will be excelent.

I'd say his best bet would be a small business that is enthusiastic about bulding gaming rigs. The one in my sig makes several premade boxes.

A small store is a good bet, although your friend won't get quite as good of a value than if he built the system himself. But with 3.5k, that shouldn't be a problem...(4800+ and Dual 7900GTXs gogo ;))

there would be no point in purchasing a 3.5k system if he doesn't even know much about computers, he wouldn't know how to utilize the system to more than 10% of its potential

I would go with a small local place. They really care about what they are giving you. It would be a little more, but chances are your friend wouldn't know what to get with the money he saved anyway, and since its his parents paying thats what I would go with.
