Have you tried nonags.com? I've picked up some fun ones in the games section there, and there are a lot more 6/6 rated games there that I'd definately try if I were in that situation :)

Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1 & 2, Duke Nuke 'em 3D, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, Diablo 1 or 2, Warcraft 2. Lots of potential for good gaming even without a 3D card.

That's what I was going to suggest. I use a laptop here at work, and just installed Diablo II on it the other day to play during downtime. Runs great, but the graphics look a bit shottier than I remember from years ago when it was first released.

Xcom UFO Defense, every other xcom is downhill if not poop after the first one.
Civilization II
Master of Orion II
Doom II
Warcraft II
C&C Red Alert 1 (every C&C game after this one was meh at best)

also, check out the early wing commander games

play it a bit just to check out the physics and you might just get addicted to the rest of it.

Just watch out, the C&C Red Alert disc I have says "Win95 ONLY" - and it means it. It'll run on Win9x and maybe WinME (never tried the latter), but it will not run on WinXP. It seems to need the Win9x kernel file. A pity, I rather liked that game. Was fun playing someone over the old modem too. Nothing beats being able to completely level your opponent's base with a few cruisers because he failed to build anything capable of reaching the water. :D

Look around on the net - there is a patch that will make it work on XP.

NOX -- A very nice game (as far as i remember it doesnt need a 3d accelerator)

Lionheart: Legacies of the Crusader. - got bad reviews, but with the maps released online, it is much more enjoyable and playable.

Close Combat Series.

I agree. Though X-Com 2 (Terror from the Deep) is worth a shot too, if anything becuase it is basically the same game as UFO Defense with an underwater setting.

I'd also add Master of Magic to that list...it's pretty much civilization with a Magic: The Gathering like setting.
