I have read that this mobo will accept a 9900k. Is this the best CPU I can get for this old mobo?

I'd love to record games but considering 8 cores are pretty standard now I assume many games are or will be using all 8 cores, leaving nothing for recording. I am going to make an assumption which may be wrong. A 10 or 12 core CPU would be better than an 8 core for Recording whilst not cutting into game performance. If this is the case are there any 10 or 12 core CPU's compatible with my Z370 mobo? My goal is to make high quality recordings of games at a steady 60fps and 1440p.

My present setup:
8700k@4.5
32gb@3733
2080ti Strix
2tb M.2@3500/3000

Nope, the highest CPU would be the 9900k.

There's not a ton of difference between it and your current CPU.

Wait for Intel's next socket this fall if you want to upgrade, or switch platforms and get a CPU like the Ryzen 3900X. You can read about the new Intel CPUs at pretty much all the hardware sites. So far, they only have info like core count and likely pricing. For actual reviews, you'll have to wait a while.

Thanks for the info. I think I may go AMD at the end of the year with a 12 core. They seem just as fast or faster and run cooler, plus the extra cores for multi tasking. I will be doing 3D modeling/rendering and probably video editing too so the extra cores will help I'm sure.

If you're waiting until the end of year, the next Ryzen 4000 CPUs will be released in September.

Both your iGPU and the 2080ti are way more than capable of recording at 1440p/60FPS

Using the CPU to record 1440p/60FPS might cut into your game performance if you are running your games without FPS restrictions, which makes sense right? When you are using all of your CPU to get as many FPS as possible than using some of your CPU for something else will lower your gaming FPS.

Also there are no games that use 8 cores, there are either games that use a fixed amount of CPU (4 cores plus change) and games that just spawn as many software threads as there are CPU threads so no matter how many cores your CPU has some games will bring it to it's limit.
