Best game like AOE II

I don't play many games but I do play AOE II The conquerors expansion a lot. I'm looking for a game that would be geared for me being that I like that game a lot.

I talked with some people and they recommended civilizations. Which civilizations is best? Also while searching for the answer to that question I came across Rome: total war, how does this compare to civlizations.

Please let me know from your wealth of pc game knowledge what and which would be best for me.

I loved AoE back in the day, I thin the only thing that ever came close to being a good substitute for it was Age of Mythology, you should check that out.

Also, another game that I actually like that never seemed to catch on was Cossacks.

Rise of Nations was for me was the closest thing to AOE2

AoE3 was great while it lasted. Medievil Total War is also great, different type of game though.

The Civ games are great in their own right, but they're turn based and may not appeal to you (they're not really anything like the AoE games in terms of gameplay). If you want to give turn based strategy a shot though, you can jump right into Civ4 assuming your system can handle it. I've spent many, many hours in Civ4 and enjoyed it immensely.

Age of Mythology is almost exactly the same thing, but with fantasy units (which you can easily ignore if you want & still beat your opponent).
I know a lot of folks talk shit about it, but Age of Mythology really is oodles of fun. I highly recommend.


Rise of Nations and Civilization is not much like Age of Empires at all. Dunno why people keep recommending them. Empire Earth 2 could be sufficient if needed.

I'm gonna disagre tha AoM was the same, the god/heroes changed the game, the thing i liked about ao2 was the rocks.scissors.paper aproach to all units, heroes/etc messed that up imo, plus i liked the econ factor of ao2, best games i ever played where the 1+ hour grinds where everone got to imp and slugged it out with cheap units with no resources left.

/anyone figure out how to get aoe2 to work with vista 64? i always get a blue screen of death while playing...
