Best freeware/shareware CD burning software and DVD player software out there?

Nero and Easy CD Creator is probably the standard now for most casual users, but is there a free one that can do burn music/data to cd and copy cd to cd? Also, a DVD player software. I wanted some suggestions on good programs I can reccommend to my friends. Thanks!
