Best Free Program for ripping music from "Line In"/"Mic"...

What I'm wanting to do is copy some sound bites from a few speeches and things for a project. Basically, I've got them recorded on my DVR and want to pull the audio portion off to my laptop.

What's the best program for recording mp3s or another compressed, managable format for free? I don't want to end up with a 500mb wav file. Thanks,
