best free mp4 to mp3 or lossless audio

Though...what's wrong with mp4? Lossless won't gain any audio quality and you'll lose quality re-compressing to mp3.
 
I'm confused. I thought mp4 was a video wrapper format. To get the audio out of it losslessly, try VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod.

mp4 is a bit of a generic term. The term and extension each can be applied to both audio (AAC) and video (h.264) files. I prefer to use .m4a and .m4v when dealing with "mp4" files. I believe the format container itself is the same either way. Specifying the intended extensions as m4a/m4v is just for user convenience.

However, if I see a .mp4 file, I do usually assume it's video.
