if WMP doesn't support it natively .. you prolly wont find legal software. mpeg2 requires licensening.

Windows media (if it's configured juuusstt right), otherwise you can get either PowerDVD or WinDVD for pretty cheap at CSFO.

of the two, I think PowerDVD is better.

VLC is cool, but I use Xine (linux app, the other biggy is Mplayer for linux).

The cool thing about VLC is that you can use it to set up a simple media stream for people to watch/listen over a network/internet. It's the client side (even though it can do simple serving) for the VLS (video lan server.). Have clients and server versions for windows/OS X/Linux among others.

Good stuff and completely free.

Why?

I use both on different machines. The current PowerDVD 5 takes up 16 MB of space and Intervideo Platinum 5 takes up twice as much at 31 MB! Performance-wise, I can't tell a difference using Nvidia 4200 cards and 19" Trinitrons. I tend to lean towards PowerDVD because it takes up less space.

However unpopular it is ...I always install it ...the free Real Player does a good job playing DVDs.
