I'm gonna build my new PC hopefully this weekend which will have a 16X DVD burner in it. I'd like to backup the whole install including XP, drivers and small apps like adobe, DirectX and flash. I'd like the best free backup, I likely won't do backups every month or two, I more or less just want to create my own restore disk.

Do not trust the windows restore ase it has never worked for me. I had a problem last weekend and needed to go back to a point before a program install and there were 8 restore points and not one of them worked.

I dont' wanna make a restore point and store it on the HD. I wanna make a backup of the HD onto a DVD. I wanna do it right after I install XP,drives, and utility programs.

I would recommend Acronis True Image www.acronis.com You can make images within windows and save them to dvd disk if you'd like. I've been using it for about a year, best software I have.

I got the demo of acronis, seems easy to use, I got it from download.com, the reviews they have of it on there don't seem too good though. I don't have advanced needs but I'm worried it may have data corruption when restoring an image. Have you ever actually used to to restore a lost partition/drive or have you just used it to backup a drive.

i wouldn't trust the reviews on download.com as gospel, they gave sandra a 58 or something and some others they bash cuz they don't understand them.
