Consumer Reports did another test on AV software. Last years test, the only two 'free' software programs were Avast which was just ahead of AVG in last place.
This year, neither were tested. The only 'free' program was Avira AntiVir Personal Edition which was replaced by FreeAntivirus 8 (the new & improved version). It was in 9th place out of 11 programs.
Last years top program was Trend Micro, the most bloated program I have ever tried. 10 Processes running and 200+MB of memory usage at idle.
2nd place was Zone Alarm which got a 'excellent' rating for performance. No where near as bloated, but still a hog.
This years #1 was BitDefender Internet Security 2008 which was the only "excellent" perfeomance rateing. McAfee was 2nd place with a warning about needing 2GB of memory for the program.
