What's the best one available? I've heard AVG is good. Is there any better? Are these free programs as good as Nortons, McAfee, etc.?

I'm not sure how well it actually works, but I've used the web-based scanner at Trend Micro's page before. I don't have any AV software on my home comp and at work we use Trend. I know that I typically will use Symantec's page for researching viruses and finding removal info/tools.

Here's another vote for AVG Free Edition. Only problem I've had is the OE plugin, which I just disabled.

I use AVG in my laptop Win 2000 Pro; use Trend Micro's PC-cillin on one desktop (app came with motherboard packaged disc) and pay for Trend Micro's Internet Security 2004 on the desktop I'm using at the moment. Personally I think Trend Micro is the best AV available at any cost. For free go with AVG.
