Hi all,

My son has expressed interest in having a FPS game. We would like to give him one for Christmas, but don't really have a clue.

Please post the titles of the FPS game(s) you have enjoyed playing the most.

Limitations:

-- PC games only
-- Rated Teen or lower

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Medal of Honour Allied Assault plus the two expansion packs, Spearhead and Breakthrough.

They're absolutely phenomenal fun to play and they don't have any blood or gore of any kind.

In Call of Duty and other WW2 games, you are shooting and killing people.

In other games such as Halo (example) you are killing monsters and robots mostly. Maybe you'll find that more acceptable for your child rather than killing humans. I don't know, it just occured to me when reading this thread.

Whatever game you buy, make sure it has a singleplayer mode so he can learn and practice before getting online. People are idiots when hiding behind a keyboard and think just because they spend 23 hours a day playing video games that they are "l33t" and your kid is a &*%#%^#&$#&! because he's new. There are no profanity filters in these games and people can be real idiots. If he can at least aim and understand the basics he won't get abused so bad.

Jedi Knight II (or any later incarnations), and I second the recommendation of NOLF and The Medal of Honor games. Heck, even Battlefield 1942 is rated Teen. If he'll be playing online, that is the most played currently but lacks in the singleplayer dept.

Halo runs almost notoriously bad on PC.

call of duty is fawkin awesome.. might be too intense for your son tho.. this is probably the most INTENSE first person shooter ever.

I started on quake 1, then went to: TFC, CS, Q3, BF1942, now CoD.. I haven't played CoD online yet (just ordered a legit copy today - 29.99 @ BB), but i can easily say its the best single player FPS game I've ever played. As a general rule.. FPS have really crappy single players but awesome multiplayer. CoD finally gives you both IMO.

If you're son likes to fly planes, shoot people, drive tanks, etc, then I'd get him BF1942. There's not a more versatile FPS game out there..

Heh, the character itself in that game is enough to put it into M category .. haha

About your son, I wouldn't be worrying about the content of the game... You can get him Serious Sam, it's just fun.. It's sorta bloody but in that game you just kill messed up creatures.. it's a really fun game and alos really easy which makes it suitable for young players... Whatever you do, don't let him play Counter Strike, you would just ruin your son's childhood :) heh.. it's an addictive, evil game... There was a 4 year old kid in my old clan playing against his father :) heh.. he was kicking our asses but he was online at least 15 hours a day..

Serious Sam is an excellent suggestion. The game is really easy to get into and is a great time for people of nearly any age. Plus its really cheap, which is always nice.

Edit: Nevermind, Serious Sam is Rated M.

Although all you do is kill monsters, so in one sense it is much less violent than many games rated teen. Though that's not my decision to make.

1. Call of Duty
2. Battlefield 1942
3. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

All WW2 games for some reason.

EDIT: Someone up there said that Halo might be more appropriate because you're shooting aliens and robots, and I think I'd agree. There is blood and guts, but the game is in no way realistic, whereas the games listed above are somewhat realistic.
