Best format for movies?

Hi Guys,

I have a bunch of movies and they are all in various formats. Avi, mp4, mkv, etc.

What's the best and most efficient format? I'm wanting to transcode all my movies into a common format. Any recommendations on an app that will do this without ruining the quality of what I have?

If I can't have something full menu in an .iso I like to have .mkv -- no real reason, just seems to becoming the normal anytime I download something.

Makemkv is what I use for blu-ray ripping. It's easy, quick, and you get one container (.mkv) that can be played back on virtually any device as it's an open standard. Using Makemkv will give you a 1:1 copy of your disc. In other words, there is no loss of quality when using Makemkv.

For DVD's (the very FEW I do in a year) I juse use DVDFab and rip to its standard Video_TS and Audio_TS folder stucture. That what I can preserve all the menus on the disc.

I use AVC for my DVDs, because it's the most widely supported format. Mind you if you have the HDD space, DVD is best left in its stock VOB format. Devices like the PS3 will play it.

For converting, I use Cyberlink Media Espresso. Being GPGPU based, its a lot faster, and more user friendly than AMD's awful encoder. It's also cross platform, meaning it works with AMD, nVidia, and Intel GPUs. You've just gotta pay for it.
