Hi all,

I am planning to build a new workstation delicated to perform photos editing. Below is a list of tools/programs that I constantly use:

1) Nikon Capture 4.0 (RAW conversion)
2) Adobe Photoshop CS
3) Neat Image

My current rig is lacking in performance. I have XP2400+ 266mhz, 512mb PC2100, multiple IDE HD, and ATI 8500. I am considering keeping the video card and HD while upgrading the rest. Since Photoshop is a 2D program, will I see the performance difference if I upgrade the video card also? Will AMD 64 3200 best for PS? Last, any difference can be seen if I get 1gb vs 1.5gb of ram?

Thanks.

David.

for photoshop I've found that once you get to a 2000 or better chip performance is mainly based off ram. If your woring on very high res files you might see a gain from 1gb to 1.5 but they would have to be some big files (10 megapixil +)

currenty a p4 is a little better at photoshop but its so marginal its not worth making that an issue. and if the gains the mac version is seeing being optomised for 64bit are any clue the 64bit on the athlon may payoff int he next year or two

If it was between the A-XP and P4 then P4. BUT with the new Athlon 64 they both are pretty mixed. It really depends on teh amount of ram and how fast a CPU you have.
But if you plan on keeping the system more then 6-12 months then I would go Athlon 64/fx or Dual Opteron.

Photoshop does not require top of the line CPU's to run efficiently. I learned PS7.0 in school and was working with P4 1.5ghz computers, and could not tell the difference between that and my 2.8C @ 3.6ghz with a GB of DDR520 RAM......in conclusion,....don't worry about it if all you are going to be doing is photoshop.

Dual 2.5 ghz G5 with 8GB of ram should do the trick for those really high res pictures...

And OP, P4 is best in Photoshop for single processor systems. Link

It was a joke poking fun at apple's website statement and "comparison"
Also, the 2.5 ghz doesnt come in single processor i dont think, not that that makes it > Opteron 250s

Lack performance? Your system is fine. I have same system except for ATI Radeon 9200 like yours I don't see any lack performance at all.
