best for overclocking

I've heard opinions on both sides, but I'm not sure which cpu type to go with for an OC rig I might buy. Amd (opteron? or the reg one) or an intel p4.
 
1700+ tbred B's are extremely overclockable. you can pick one up for $65 at excaliberpc. yeah, a heafty price for a 1700+ but all 4 i got from there hit 2.4 Ghz on air (almost a 1 ghz OC)
 
Yea basically the popular chips out right now for overclocking seem to be the AMD Athlon XP 1700+ Thoroughbred (like Shady06 said from excaliberPC.com cause they guarantee a certain chip), the AMD Ahtlon XP 2500+ Barton which can get some pretty amazing overclocks as well, and the P4 2.4C. I think right now, as far as the AMD vs. Intel rival, either can be purchased with pretty good satisfaction. Athlon XP's are cheaper, can overclock better, and are generally faster per clock cycle than Pentiums. Pentiums are a bit heftier with a IHS to prevent dies from cracking and come with a very nice retail HSF solution. They have higher clock speeds and have the performance edge in general right now over AMDs. As for overclocking, both sides have very nice motherboards and both can overclock tremendously on air cooling alone. So, uh, flip a coin.

Jep but if you don't have good aircooling it won't be stable with higher vcore...usually you manage get to 2-2,2Ghz with 1700+ thoroughbred with b-core with normal Vcore.I think that this is the normal way tho overclock for 24/7 use. I got 2100+ which goes 2,18Ghz prime95 9 hours stable with normal vcore....with 1,85Vcore it goes to 2,5Ghz pifast through...i'll test how far i can get it with prime95

My opinion is that if you want to have more for your money get Amd....less expencive and faster than intel in some tests...in memorytests intel is faster.


 
I say its about equal on each side right now. Intel has the resonably priced C series which is really turning some heads. Most people get past 3.3 ghz with ease. But if you want to save some money and get some great results, the 1700+ and 2500+ is still the way to go. Honestly I don't think you can go wrong either way though.

agreed, it is all about the budget but either way you go you are gonna get stellar performance
