If you were to use it with an ATI AIW radeon , which would it be, suppose price isn't a factor

1. Dell 1702fp

2. Planar PV174

3. SGI 1600SW

4. Other

Any input would be great!

I have the planar 17.4 and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a high quality display with great tech support to back it up. My monitor had 1 defective pixel in it so I emailed planar about it. They said they would replace the monitor if I wished but I decided that it really wasn't that big of deal. The built-in speakers are worthless for anything except basic windows sounds. The extra usb ports are nice although I am not currently using them. Most of all, the display has excellent clarity which is great because I do a lot of reading on the internet. The planars are usually the cheapest too, at least when dell has a special on them.

I'd say go with the planar
the SGI is a better lcd, but the difference is subtle, unlike the difference between either of these and a crt.
the SGI needs a card that supports its resolutions, and would get in teh way of gaming.
either way you go, I *highly* recommend using a DVI connection

EDIT:
I had the choice of teh planar/SGI at ~the same price, and i went with the planar. I've been happy with my purchase.

first of all where are u planning on getting that SGI 1600SW -- theyre discontinued

second they have fuc*ed up resolution so u need compatible vid card and the multilink (whole package will cost u ~1100) and ya some games wont adapt to the resolution, theyll either stretch or display big bars on the side

third the sgi is not too tall cause its widescreen

i'd say go with the dell cause of the madd deals, or get the planar

I can get SGI's on Ebbay. I am keeping my options open. The .23 dot pitch is what is tempting me. Had Monitors that were .28 and they looked like crap. Which games won't work on it? I thought you just chose desktop resolution and it will be fine. I like the Planar but its .27 dot pitch. Dell is even higher I think...

You can use just about ANY type of video card, contrary to what others have said here. Also, you can use DVI and VGA for display, as long as you have SGi's multilink adapter. Here's a review: http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=39577 that explains it all :)

The SGI beats all other LCDs because: "It is safe to say that the SGI 1600SW had zero issues with motion artifacts. As a matter of fact, we were hard pressed to see any streaking or blurring at all while gaming or viewing DVD titles. This LCD is an excellent choice for gamers and movie buffs alike. In addition, we took the above in game action shot at 1024X768 resolution (actual image is 800X600). The action was crisp and detailed here as well, even though this setting was several notches down from its native resolution."

It can also be found @ around $700 :)

I don't know enough about the ones listed to help you in choosing one, but don't wait to get one, LCD prises are rising and will continue to rise ~15.00/month for the next few months. The LCD glass panel mfgs are raising the price.. :|

I'd definately say the SGI. Used one of these at work a year ago, and it just plain kicked ASS. I've used other flat panels, and they just don't compare. For me gaming isn't as much of an issue as good video playback and having a *hitload of xterms and mozilla windows open at once, so perhaps your needs may differ. I've heard glowing reveiws of this thing running FPS games though, due to its excellent refresh and dot pitch (although obviously they won't fill the whole screen, few games allow you to play at 1600X1200.

And yes, technically it is "old" technology in terms of when it was introduced, but keep in mind that it was orginally only for the most high-end systems (and priced accordingly). Its like saying a Cray sucks because it was built 5 years ago.

I also have a Planar (18.1") and give it the thumbs up. I am using it with a GeForce3 200 Ti with DVI out. The monitor looks great for both general use and games.
