The drive I'm talking about is the one listed in this Hot Deal Thread (NEC 8X Black Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Drive, Model ND-2510A). Several links point to here to download the firmware but I don't understand what this bitsetting and rip lock and other stuff are.

So could somebody to one of the following:
- Explain what these technical settings are
- Hook me up with links explaining what these things do
- Directly compare these different firmwares

For the most part, I'm using this DVD player for backing up movies and I'm using Longten001 media. What I would like to do is speed up either ripping or burning speeds (if it's possible) without losing any compatability in the process. If none of these firmwares can do that for me, then a second goal would be to increase compatability (if it's possible). If none of these firmwares can do that for me, then I'll likely not have a reason to flash to a different version (unless somebody gives me a reason that I didn't know about). :)

Thanks in advance for the help and sorry about my ignorance in this field. :)

From the read me file included in the downloadable firmware:

Rip Lock removes the speed locks on single and dual layer DVD-ROM discs
with a VIDEO_TS directory.

RPC1 removes region state handling commands and checks.

Basically, Rip Lock let's you rip your DVDs faster. The lock was put in place to keep the drive spinning slower so it would be as quiet as possible when watching DVDs. The good part is that it's quiet, however since it spins so slow, it takes FOREVER to rip the DVD to your hard drive.

RPC1 just removes the region lock on the drive. This would enable you to watch any DVD from any country.

JackBurton, that info helped me quite a bit - thanks.

"best" really depends on the media you're using. Certain firmware revisions are optimized for different types of media.

Also check out http://www.herrie.org/ for more NEC 2510 firmware.

As posted earlier, I'm using Longten001 media. I've yet to find any mention of this in any of the firmware notes (although I could have missed). What firmware would be best for this media? I think I want Rip Lock so I can rip faster.
