With USB 2.0, NEC is the clear winner when it comes to PCI add-on cards.

What's the best Firewire chipset? NEC? Agere? Texas Instruments?

I've heard that the Oxford FW chips are good, but hard to find anything based on empirical test data. Seems to be all anecdotal. Good luck. TI has been in the FW arena longer than anyone so one would think their chips would be good. I have a combo card USB/FW that uses Via chips. Most would look down their noses at that, but it worked well for me and I got it for under $10. shipped off eBay. Hard to beat that combo...
