I started with zone alarm, it seemed to hog a lot of resources and lag a little with online games...I switched to tiny and it works like a champ. Tiny seems a little harder to configure not as straight forward. Other than that I recommend it!

I agree with others that Tiny is the way to go.

But it's not Tiny anymore, as of 2.1 version it is now called Kerio and available here.

i would stay away from zone alarm. I had problems (not that you will) on several different PCs with ZA.
Everything would be working fine, but eventuly it would kill my internet connection. werid stuff.

Now i have been using Tiny firewall for the last 10months and havent had i single problem with it.

Are you sure about this? I mean, TPF's page is still available at Tiny Software. Where'd you come across Kerio, cuz I haven't heard of it...TIA

I've heard that a lot of users have had problems with ZoneAlarm in XP, so I'd suggest that you stay away from that. Tiny Personal Firewall works good with XP, like the other users have suggested. Norton Internet Security works also and you can get it "free" if you try hard enough 😛

From what I have gathered it seems that there was a split in Tiny software and the main developer of TPF Stanislav Kolar (sp?) is now developing Kerio Personal Firewall. It is now in version 2.1.2 and uses the old TPF codebase.

Tiny has plans to release TPF 3.0 that uses brand new codebase at some point but it is not to my knowledge even in Alpha yet.

So basically very confusing, Tiny hasn't issued any official announcements. Kerio just announced that the development has been transfered to them just like WinRoute's development.

For me this means that I use Kerio since it is actively developed and works just like, if not better, TPF.

More info at Kerio Firewall user group. There also some info about the Tiny/Kerio issue if you look at the old messages.

Thanks for the replies, well I was kinda hoping that people would not say Tiny (as I am using that already) 😛

The issue I have with tiny, is that when installed on a winxp box (SERVER) with ICS installed... Mirc installed on machines connecting to the server box don't work.

However when Tiny Firewall is disabled, then the machines with Mirc work perfectly. And no, its nothing to do with the firewall rules!! Anyone have this problem??

If you can help, thanx

Um, actually it does have to deal with Firewall rules 🙂 You need to have it forward port 113 traffic to all your machines that use mIRC. Atleast thats what I had to do with my Linksys Router once I started using Tiny.

Thanks, but how do I do that 😉 😕

Thanks, but I have already decided on Tiny, all I need is to get mirc working on the connecting PC's.

Pls look at my other Q, above this one 🙂

The easiest way I found to get around this problem is to use bncs. The problem with port 113 is that ident lookups wont work. If you are being told to install identd that is the problem. If that is the problem you are facing then there may not be an easy solution. How many machines do you have that try to connect to IRC from behind your firewall? If it is more than 1 you will run into a problem. If it is only 1 then you may be able to place a rule in TPF (its been a while since I used it) to forward port 113 requests to that one machine. If it is more than 1 machine there probably wont be an easy way to do this using Windows software.

Really? I've been using ZoneAlarm 3 with XP for the last couple of weeks without any issues - its a great firewall and since its got an ad-blocker built in I think its great!

I am using zone alarm 3 pro on WinXP. The only issue that I have is every once in a while I can't surf the net. I have to shut down ZA and restart it. I am on dial up. I can dial in a few times and surf with no problems, then all of a sudden it wont work. Other that that it's great. I also like the added pop up stopper!

If anyone knows a solution to this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
