I've been running McAfee's security suite (AV, Firewall, registry cleaner, etc.) on all of my family's computers for a few years. While I realize it's not the best out there, I really can't complain; most of the time it works as intended, and other than being unnecessarily bloated (only an issue on older systems with less RAM) it works pretty well.
I'm slowly taking the plunge and cancelling our subscription. We'll be switching over to 3 paid Avira Premium licenses on the three most heavily used PCs, with the rest running Avira's free version. However, I heard that Avira's security suite comes with a firewall that leaves something to be desired, and I really don't want to pay for a second piece of software just to get the same functionality we used to have.
With all that said, I have two questions:
1. Are there any free, good, and easy to use firewalls out there? I heard something about Comodo - is it better than the default Windows firewall / Windows Defender (which seems like a joke to me)?
2. I know Avira has great on-demand detection rates, but what about their real-time protection? I want to make sure most of the trojans and other garbage that come off of random websites will be detected and properly dealt with, at least as well as - or better than - McAfee did.
The software will be used on several Windows Xp Home / Professional (x86) computers, a Vista x86, and a Vista x64 machine.
Thank you.
