Best fingerprint reader app (to fully replace password-style logon)?

On my wife's 1330 XPS laptop, whenever she gets to the logon screen, if she runs her fingerprint through the reader, it logs her in automatically, but if she clicks on her user ID, it gives her the option to enter a password.

I don't see the point of the whole fingerprint security if the user can still just enter a password for access. Only if a user's fingerprint were to stop working should there then be a backup password (which she entered when she first set up the fingerprint).

Is there a way to do away with the normal password request at startup and just have fingerprint logon? If not with the UPEK software that came with the laptop, then maybe with another program?

Thanks in advance...!

Multiple users for the system.

Some may not have or want the fingerprint option.

If the hardware ie fingerprint scanner failed or if you had an injury there needs to be a backup system in place. If you are concerned about security just use a very complex password and be sure to store it in a secure place separate from the laptop.

I agree with MadAmos on this issue. I have had three different fingerprint readers. The best generic system was the Sony FIU 600 Puppy. I also had the300. It is very sensitive and can be programmed for multiple fingers for the same user or single fingers for different users. My current one is built into my T60 laptop. It is also very sensitive - and a lot depends on the exactly angle of the swipe and how hard you press.

A stong password is really important as an alternative entry. The F-print is faster and saves time and energy. I have not tried Microsoft's reader - similar but bulkier than Sony's.
