That's not bad if I don't mind turning 10 megapixel pictures into 10 kilopixel thumbnails.

Yeah, I'd give recuva a try...can't beat free. I have recovered some files using Recuva.

If you can't then GetDataBack is great. I have used it with a lot of success on many drives and jobs.

i've heard EnCase is the best but probably overkill and beyond price range.
