I really like West Side Story's "Maria" possibly my favorite, simply a beautiful song. I like pretty much all of "The Sound of Music," "Les Miserables," and "Phantom of the Opera". I've all these productions in theatre and they are really good.

Post your favorite ATOT.

Yes, also one of my favorites, I can't believe I forgot to mention it in my OP.

I like "Unclefvcker" from South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.

Thats not a musical....

I'd call it one.

That being said, I enjoyed some of the Rocky Horror Picture Show songs, and whatever that song was from Moulin Rouge that was a montage of modern/popular songs.

Have you seen it? Tell me how it isn't a musical.

Yes, I've seen the movie, been a long time though so maybe my memory is shady. Anyways, I meant serious musicals, not Southpark. My fault for not being more clear.

It's no less serious than Avenue Q or Urinetown...

Not sure I can pick a single favorite song. Perhaps Morning Glow from Pippin or All Good Gifts from Godspell. Or maybe Meadowlark from The Baker's Wife or In Whatever Time We Have from Children Of Eden. Clearly I'm a big Stephen Schwartz fan.

Favorite musicals:
Little Shop Of Horrors
Man Of La Mancha
Pippin
Godspell
Evita
Urinetown
Threepenny Opera
Assassins

What?! :Q

So is Avenue Q not a "serious musical" either? How about The Producers?

Get off your high horse :|. Musicals are made to provide enjoyment, not to be used as status symbols

you should listen to les miserables - its the miss saigon soundtrack in the original form!
i was horribly dissappointed when i saw miss saigon, i was so excited to hear some more cameron makintosh scoring, and then it was almost totally lifted from les mis for its melodies and just slightly changed.

MrsBugi, how can we call 'rent' a musical?!?! there's like one song in the damn thing - the rest is simply carrying a note here and there w/ some music in a background, last i checked, that a musical does not make!

my faves:
guoziming, love that song as well - also like 'near to you' from damn yankees
les miserables of course, each theatrical cast has its moments but love the complete symphonic alot

When I was a kid, my sister gave me the "Jesus Christ Superstar" soundtrack album. I still have those songs stuck in my brain 30 years later!

Ughh, what high horse? I just said that I didn't think Southpark was a serious musical. Being a cartoon and all, not for its comedic value, maybe you should step back and think about this. :disgust:

Go back and re-watch it and listen to the songs. I've honestly considered using some of the songs for auditions just to see if anyone realized it wasn't from a "normal" musical.

Not to be pedantic, but Cameron Mackintosh was the producer - Claude-Michel Schonberg wrote the scores.

That said, songwriters have a style. Sondheim sounds like Sondheim. Schonberg sounds like Schonberg, Schwartz sounds like Schwartz, G&S sound like G&S. Miss Saigon is no more identical to Les Mis than Phantom Of The Opera is to Cats. Musicals written by the same guy, especially consecutively, are going to sound similar to each other.

You're going to make this statement and then list Phantom Of The Opera as a favorite of yours? Andrew Lloyd "Second Act is almost entirely comprised of reprises of the songs from the First Act" Webber!

Mamma Mia!

Say what you will, but that stuff is like musical crack.
It makes you stupider when it's around, most people look down upon you for it but god damn, after you get that first taste you want every last bit.

Jesus Christ Superstar also has a sweeeeet score.

....and 3/4's of Avenue Q's cast are puppets. Maybe you should think about what you're saying
