I thought going on edens 94 through milwaukee and heading west would be the fastest way but apparently all the online directions say to take 90 west then take 39 north? wtf?

I 90 goes right to Madison, but it also dpends on where you start from and traffic conditions. If you are south of the merge take I 90 (depending on traffic) but if you are up in Evanston, take I 94,

You may still want to take 90. There is a lot of traffic on 94 between Chicago and Milwaukee. Plus you'll have to drive through two large cities on 94. It really isn't that far out of the way to get on 90 and it is more direct. (depending on how far north you are)

If you live on the North Shore, you'd be wasting too much time getting all the way out to 90. There's no real good way to get there. Take 94. The traffic through Milwaukee isn't too bad if you avoid rush hour.

I personally use 90 from here (Madison) to Chicago - traffic has moved along nicely for me in the past.

If you take 94, once you get to milwaukee, don't stay on 94 and go through downtown, hang a left onto 894 just past the airport and follow the around. It hooks up with 94 as it heads west out of the city to Madison.

I've driven both routes, and I encountered far less traffic taking 94 to Milwaukee then over to Madison.

From Waukegan to Madison I take 94 to milwaukee then over. Takes me 2 hours door to door to my apt on campus. (if traffic is good)
