Best Fantasy Literature series?

Lord of the Rings set the precedent for all of the fantasy books now-a-days, but Robert Jordan has improved on the writing, and I believe that his books are better.

The only two I've read are LOTR and Jordan's Wheel of Time, although I'd like to get into more.
LOTR is simply a classic. The writing in WoT is good, but the plot gets too slow in some points IMO.

My two all-time favorites after reading several hundred fantasy novels:
L.E. Modesitt's Recluce books (best read in publication-date order)
Elizabeth Moon's Deed of Paksenarrion trilogy

I like the first 3-4 Robert Jordan but got more and more annoyed with the character portrayls and increasing "Dr. Who"-style running-arround he used to pad out the books.

I'll second the recommendations for Raymond Feist / Riftwar and Zelazny / Amber.

Good but out of print: Paul Edwin Zimmer's Dark Border books (he was Marion Zimmer Bradley's brother)

Some good science fantasy: CJ Cherryh's Morgaine books, MZ Bradley's Darkover, Julian May's Many-Colored Land saga.

Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow, & Thorn, as well as Otherland (though Otherland isn't 100% fantasy).

Favorite series thus far are the Farseer Trilogy, the Liveship Traders and the Tawny Man, all by Robin Hobb. I've read just about every major fantasy series and none have gripped me as much as these novels.

No contest, A Song of Ice and Fire is the best fantasy epic.

Robert Jordan just goes on and on and on... and i find his seperation of males and females getting old.

I also like Robin Hobb's Farseen Trilogy and Tawny Man series.

Another vote for Terry Brooks and his Shannara series. Brooks toke Tolkien's blueprint for fantasy writing and developed them even further. The first Shannara "trilogy" consisted of The Sword of Shannara, Elfstones of Shannara, and Wishsong of Shannara. I liked Elfstones the best in this "series." I mention them as a series even though each can stand alone. I warn you - each book would probably be its own trilogy today. These books were huge!!

His next two Shannara series are "Heritage of Shannara" and "The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara" These are also well-written stories that you will find entertaining.

This fall, Brooks will release the first installment of his new Shannara trilogy called High Druid of Shannara. The book is titled Jarka Ruus.

Just to finish it off, there is also the prequel to the original Shannara trilogy called "First King of Shannara"

To sum up, look into these books. You will not be disappointed.

I really enjoyed the Shannara series and the Riftwar saga but it seems as with most series, the first books were better... how about Terry Goodkind?
