Hello

We need a USB 3.0 3.5" HDD to make off-site backups.

Im going with WD as Ive had bad experiences with Seagate.

I guess I would be looking at WDBFJK0040HBK or the My Book at 4TB at €156.00

Any other recommendations?

I would use a Vantec case and put my own HDD in it.

BTW, I have had WD, Hitachi, Seagate and a couple of others. The only failure I ever had was WDC. But, I don't that sort of thing cloud my judgment. There are lemons in every crop, and sometimes it is circumstances.

Agree with below about UASP. That allows both HDD and SSD to be used. Stands for UnAvailable Seconds Path.

I'm kind of with you on the Seagate 3.5" externals... I had a 2TB that ran quite hot. Pulled the drive out and it's fine... so I can only conclude that the enclosure wasn't the best design.

I have 9 WD My Book 4TB drives. Only one has gone down in two years, and WD promptly replaced it.

In reality, just get what is the least expensive, especially if it is just used for backup and not as an every day driver. I have been buying the Toshiba externals when they go on sale at OfficeMax for the last couple of years and none have died yet. I don't think it would have mattered if it were Seagate or WD, though.
