Best External HDD

I think any external drive is fine, unless you prefer brand name drives or want specific features like automatic back-up.

I use the WD 1TB HDD, works fine for me. The only problem I have ran into is the file system not allowing me to transfer a single 8GB file to it (probably my laptops fault, though I haven't even looked into it since it isn't a big deal)

Hi

DO NOT buy Seagate FreeAgent drive(s). I had 500GB drive purchased August 08 with 300GB data and one day it just did not work. so read the following if you are interested (it would seem like a rant...) in how serious I am in telling not to buy the seagate hdds in general.

1. Tried connecting in various other computers (friend's) with no fruitful result. The data was so important ....
2. So I thought the USB controllers or some electronics would have gone bad n not the disk---> so opened the seagate hdd( knowing full well it will void warranty). Carefully opened it as shown in youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIs3Pz15OFU
without making any visible marks on the plastic casing---> tookk out hdd---> connected in my pc sata directly...didnot work...tried it in my friend's pc(s). did not work...
3. googled on this drive n found MAANNNYY people faced this problem n it has overheating problem. This is quite intuitive if you see the structure of FreeAgent drives from seagate..there is not air vent or fins or room HDD to breathe(u know what i mean..air cooling).
4. took it to warranty claim..and asked for data recovery..they dont do recovery...but can suggest other authorized tech who do it..but it will void warranty. IRRITATED by the guys at seagate center..i just had to get a replacement..They gave me a 750GB harddisk which I am selling on craigslist.

Also my friend had a Western Digital 'my book' ext hdd...which started giving some problems in not getting detected but in general WD products are more reliable.

GET a WD ext hdd..the best in brand or

GET a WD ordinary SATA HDD...n purchase a good EXT HDD casing n make it yourself.

HOPE my inputs help you in some way!!

🙂

Well I'd actually like one that has good software back up and either sata e or usb 2.0 for a connection.

I'm also looking for another one just to transfer files form buddies computers, etc ( they edit movie stuff for me )

Check to make sure drive is formatted NTFS. Most likely it's FAT32 which has a max file size of 4gb or so.

Alrighty, does anyone have any suggestions as to what a good External HDD Case is...?? Pretty lost about that .

If you need to carry your external drive around or you know you will only need one external drive, get something like these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817173042 (available in other colors)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817145167
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817371008

Here's a good starting point: http://www.newegg.com/Store/Su...me=External-Enclosures

If you don't need to take the drive around with you and/or you may get more external drives in the future (I have 5), I definitely recommend something like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817153071

Shop around for the cheapest price on whatever you buy. Enclosures and the BlacX generally run around $20 during good sales/rebates.

The Vantec ones are nice. I have one of their 2.5'' enclosures. Aluminum, installs easy, and solidly made.

Belmont's problem definitely sounds FAT32 related. That's one of the biggest problems I've encountered since I use both Mac and PC. FAT32 is the only really universal file system (or at least the only one I know of) but the 4gb limit gets to be a problem when you're using it to store video.

Nice post to the external HDD enclosures on Newegg. ^ ^ I was asking if anyone had any experience with the cases/ which one they prefered. Granted I can be lazy but not when it comes to this stuff.

I have the Rosewill esata case, the BlacX esata/usb dock, and a Vantec PATA 3.5 and esata 2.5 enclosure.

No problems with any of these.

Vantec has the best form factor, nice and tight. No fans or cooling so not good for hot drives (Seagate 1.5tbs).

Rosewill is a bit clunkier but it does have a (loud) fan which makes them good for hot drives.

My favorite is the BlacX, by far.

I bought the Rosewill and Vantec because they were on sale or had rebates at the time I needed them. I've heard great things about the Antec MX-1 also.

I take it the BlacX is for a back up solution..? / Does it hurt anything that the HDD is just sitting out in the open [Possibly a dumb question but thought I'd ask it anyway]

I'm looking to put a WD 1TB BLACK edition in the case.

Yep, I use all my externals for backup or media storage purposes. Been using them about 8 months+ now with problems at all. As long as you don't do something like spill coffee on the drive or anything there's nothing wrong with having them exposed like that.

The WD Black is a great drive. If you're using it for storage/backup however it will have no noticeable performance advantage over other drives.
