Handybits EasyCrypto Deluxe 5.0

<< Holy moly! We've finally found one that actually works. Handybits EasyCrypto Deluxe is an encryption tool that packs what you want when you need it. This tool lets you password protect any file, and will keep that file encrypted until the correct password is entered. If you don't remember that password, consider it lost data. That's how highly encrypted this baby gets. >>

vektor,

What do you want to encrypt, and for what purpose? There are different uses for encrypted files. If other people in remote locations must have access to the data, then you have different requirements for the encryptor than if the encrypted data is always to be used locally. W2K's own inbuilt Encrypting File System is no slouch. Its efficacy for your use will be determined by whether or not you want user accounts to control access to the data and, of course, whether or not you are using NTFS as your file system. For encrypting email and other data which must be transferred safely to only select others to whom you have issued passwords, Pretty Good Privacy's freeware version (http://web.mit.edu/network/pgp.html) is very good, and it provides a means of signature verification sthat makes it possible for data recipients to be certain that the data really is from you. There are other less complex (than EFS or PGP) encryption programs, including most (all?) of the compression products like WinZip.

The final determinant of the efficacy of a given encryption system, however, is the user. Encryption makes it easy for a user to lose data or to put the data at risk in the mistaken belief that encryption is the final answer to security. I've seen cases where encrypted data gave away the ball game in the file names!!!

Jim
